Get Your Mom a Wine Club Subscription For Mother's Day

Mother’s Day weekend is a time for showering your favorite lady with love, flowers, and certainly a good glass of wine. This year, we’re thinking inside the box—because it’s what’s inside that counts—and giving Mom a wine club subscription.

These days, there are a ton on the market from which to choose. Who doesn’t want a case of wine conveniently delivered to their doorstep? We’ve pared down the selection to some stunners offering up unique and interesting services, perfect for gifting.

SommSelect
Co-founders Ian Cauble and Brandon Carneiro aim to expand both your collection and knowledge with SommSelect. Monthly memberships have two options—Blind Six and Somm Six—and are both priced at $199. Urging you to get out of your comfort zone and learn the art of blind tasting, the box contains three whites and three reds—all individually wrapped in black tissue paper to conceal the identity from the consumer (and numbered in the order you should taste). Also included is an instruction guide, tasting note grid and a packet of Cauble’s personal tasting notes for you to read after your tasting.

Shannon Westfall’s Vinfluence highlights a boutique winery every month—May’s pick is Bella Luna Estate in Paso Robles, California, with featured wines including a 2012 Sangiovese Grosso and 2016 Bella Bianca. Three bottles per box—typically two reds and a white, sparkling or Rosé—will cost you $100 plus shipping and tax. Westfall values quality, authenticity and sustainability, focusing on socially sound farming, production and labor practices. A percentage of profits are also donated to your choice of three nonprofits that Westfall holds dear: City Harvest, Sustainable Harvest International and Fiver Children’s Foundation. (That’s something to drink about!)

Declaring themselves as a more unconventional wine club, Winc (pronounced ‘wink’) is a California-based winery that offers an online subscription service. Proprietors Xander Oxman and Geoff McFarlane, as well as winemaker/sommelier Brian Smith, create and curate over 100 wines; they source from independent vineyards and winemakers, and focus on smaller batches to create wines with distinct character. According to your preferences, four bottles are delivered per month—with a complimentary delivery fee!—for the affordable cost of $39.

This wines-by-the-glass membership club features wines you won’t typically find at your corner store. (Current listed favorites include the Corte Di Valle Chianti Classico and the Beaux Regards Sancerre.) Using closed-nitrogen technology to prevent the wines from coming in contact with oxygen, the wine is good for up to three (!) years. Your personalized wine flight features three or six glasses all hand-selected by a team of sommeliers, tasting notes, recommendations and pairings. A three month subscription is $81—that’s $27 per box or $9 per glass, definitely worth a toast!

And surely, once you've got your mother's wine subscription service in order (or your own, too—we won't judge if you simultaneously set one up for yourself!), you'll want to see how those wines stack up in our reviews. Pair a wine subscription service with a Robert Parker Wine Advocate Subscription and get the inside scoop on your new wines from our experts!

From all of us at The Wine Advocate, cheers and have a truly happy Mother’s Day.
