La Cagouille

This restaurant has been open many for many years, and is the place to go for absolutely unadorned, exceptionally fresh and pure seafood and shellfish. I hadn’t been here in over a decade, but I had sent many friends here looking for excellent seafood, so we decided to go back for a delicious lunch. This is a no-brainer when it comes to fairly-priced and super-fresh seafood. We started with the tiny deep-fried smelts and deep-fried calamari, which were just as good as these two dishes can be – not greasy, with very intense flavors. The poached langoustines were good, although nothing to write home about, but the mussels were superb, as was a gorgeous rouget that was cooked perfectly with some garlic, parsley, and olive oil. With that we had a deliciously dry wine from Tourraine, the M de Marionette 2005, which was singing beautifully with this food.

I will say, the service was abrupt and decidedly unfriendly, something I have not encountered in Paris in over fifteen years. There is no real excuse for that, but I did notice that we were the only Americans at a luncheon where the restaurant was packed with French people, and perhaps they are not used to having Americans there for lunch, as opposed to dinner. We definitely got a very cold, haughty attitude not only from our waitress but also from the maitre d’.
