Here’s What You Missed at Matter of Taste New York City

On December 3, Matter of Taste returned to the Big Apple featuring a fantastic line-up of over 250 wines, all rated 90 points or higher by Robert Parker Wine Advocate. Held at The Conrad New York, the theme of this year’s event was Left-Bank Bordeaux-Inspired wines and Champagne.
“Matter of Taste is really about a way to engage with our readers, kind of bringing all of those wines that we spend such a long time writing about to life,” says Wine Advocate editor-in-chief Lisa Perrotti-Brown, who also reviews wines for Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Oregon and California’s Central Coast.
“You get a unique opportunity to taste wines that you normally don’t find in one city,” add’s Stephan Reinhardt, reviewer for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Alsace, Champagne and the Loire Valley. “We also show a lot of rarities here, and it’s not a commercial event that people want to sell the wines at. They want to represent their philosophy and what their work is all about.”
Reinhardt, along with Salon Delamotte director Mathieu Pouchan, kicked off the weekend with the Champagne Salon Dinner at two-Michelin-starred restaurant Daniel. The five-course menu showcased the wines of Champagne Salon and Champagne Delamotte, featuring six vintages of each and all dating back to 1970.
“During Matter of Taste, we stage different Master Classes,” says Monica Larner, Wine Advocate reviewer of Italy. “Basically, it gives us an opportunity to give more detail and more background and a real taste of a territory that might be thousands and thousands of kilometers away.”
Master Classes that took place at the event included a Champagne Bollinger perspective, The Life of Cardinale, and a look at the difference between Washington State wines versus Western Australia wines.
“To me, it’s very important—the landscape, the vineyard and the people,” says Luis Gutiérrez, reviewer of Spain, Argentina, Chile and Jura. “In a Master Class, you can hear about these people and about these places. And it’s good to get the context—all the rest, not only what’s in the bottle.”
